THE HUMAN RACE LAUNCHES $1.5 MILLION “RACE TO THE FUTURE” CAMPAIGN FOR THE CARYL
D. PHILIPS CREATIVITY CENTER
(Dayton, OH) – January 10 – After two years of discussions,
research and planning, The Human Race, Dayton’s only professional theatre
company, announces a $1.5 million dollar campaign to renovate and maintain the
Caryl D. Philips Creativity Center of The Human Race. “The Center will be named
for Caryl Philips,” declares Jan Rudd, Human Race Trustee and campaign chair.
“Not only is Caryl a founder and longtime supporter of The Human Race, she has
shown great leadership by helping us launch our campaign with a truly generous
$500,000 gift from the Jesse and Caryl Philips Foundation.”
“As one of the three founders of The Human Race,” states Caryl Philips, “I have
been proud to watch the progress the company has made over a nineteen year
period. I am so pleased to be able to help The Human Race further their goals.”
Those goals include expanding The Human Race’s education programs and providing
space to build and store costumes, props and scenery at 116 North Jefferson
Street. “We are so excited to have such impressive classroom and workshop
space,” adds Kevin Moore, Human Race Executive Director. “Our production
rehearsals and classes have shared a single space for years. This gives us the
opportunity to provide a number of new education opportunities for students and
adults. It also provides a working space for our technical theatre component –
namely props and costumes – close to The Loft Theatre.”
The funds raised by the “Race To The Future” campaign will be used to renovate
the space on Jefferson Street and to establish an endowment ensuring the future
of that facility. “We are more than a third of the way to our goal,” says Jan
Rudd, ‘thanks to Caryl and a number of pre-campaign gifts from Trustees and
staff, and major gifts from Steve and Lou Mason, The Kettering Fund and the Arts
Center Foundation. We are off to a great start!”
With renovations set for this spring, The Human Race is preparing to start
classes in the new Caryl D. Philips Creativity Center of The Human Race by
September 2005 – creating another exciting arts center downtown.
“The Human Race Theatre Company has become a nationally recognized professional
theatre thanks to many talented individuals providing the Dayton Community with
innovative programming and performances,” says Caryl Philips.
“The truth is,” adds Kevin Moore, “we couldn’t do it without people like Caryl
Philips.”
