ADVENTURES IN THEATRE I
6 – 8 year olds

Series I: Poof! Magical Moments in Theatre
September 17 – October 15, 2005
Hear stories of wizards and magicians, ordinary folk and fantastic beings with special powers. Then ignite the imagination and become the characters in the stories.

Series II: Animal Stories
October 22 – November 19, 2005
Listen to Aesop’s fables and favorite animal tales and examine the lives of animals, real and imagined. Work on animal characterization with movement and sound, and put on animal make-up for the full effect.

Series III: Around the World
January 14 – February 11, 2006
Get to know folktales from around the world that share important insight into life in various countries. Take on a role in a particular tale and use improvisational skills to “play out” the story. Add music from that country and share scenes with each other.

Series IV: Scavenger Hunt
March 4 – April 1, 2006
This creative drama class is based on scavenger hunts designed to explore found objects. The objects discovered are the basis for stories and plays that connect props with dramatic action and the development of character.

Series V: Positively Puppets
April 22 – May 20, 2006
Use puppets to model positive behavior and good citizenship. Create a puppet for a variety of types of people and learn how to respect and accept all kinds of people in our world.

ADVENTURES IN THEATRE II
9 – 12 year olds
Saturday mornings, 12:00 pm – 1:15 pm

Fee: $50 per five-week series

Series I: American Tall Tales
September 17 – October 15, 2005
Travel back to the past when the west was wild and study the tall tales of Pecos Bill, Mike Fink, Paul Bunyon and Slue-Foot Sue. Exaggeration is the key. Create these amazing characters and act out their stories.

Series II: “If I Were in Charge of the World” Poetry Drama
October 22 – November 19, 2005
Draw upon Judith Viorst’s poetry and the works of other poets who write for children to create drama scenes. Then write an original poem to share with the class using choral reading techniques.

Series III: Shakespeare’s Comedies
January 14 – February 11, 2006
Study some of Shakespeare’s most comic scenes. Learn to speak in iambic pentameter and analyze the text. Identify the forms of humor used in each scene before presenting them for a sharing session in class.

Series IV: Improvisation Sensation
March 4 – April 1, 2006
Sharpen your wit and think fast! Invent dialogue for specific situations and let the scene unfold all by itself. Work together with openness and spontaneity and let the fun begin!

Series V: Essentials in Scene Study
April 22 – May 20, 2006
Read selected scenes especially written for youth and analyze the text. Experience auditions, be cast in a scene and rehearse with classmates. Memorize lines and perform for parents and friends.

FRONT AND CENTER STAGE
16 year olds – adult
Saturday afternoons, 1:30 pm – 2:45 pm
Fee: $60 per five-week series

Series I: Improvisation 1
September 17 – October 15, 2005
Instructor: Katie Pees
Explore a wide variety of theatre games, exercises and improvisational techniques designed to develop an understanding of the notion of “act before you think” spontaneity and invention.

Series II: Improvisation 2
October 22 – November 19, 2005
Instructor: Katie Pees
Expanding on the exercises and techniques introduced in Improvisation 1, this advanced class allows students to hone their improv skills.

Series III: The Art of Mask
January 14 – February 11, 2006
Instructors: Dr. Mary Donahoe, Tristin Cupp
This class explores acting with masks, both neutral and character masks, using improvisation and theatre games. Students learn how to construct a mask and create an original character and story.
